Triumph Gallery is pleased to present My Hometown in the 1990s,Wang Yan’s solo exhibition from October 17th to November 20th, 2021. The exhibition will include more than seventy prints and watercolor works created by the artist since the beginning of this century. Wang Yan was born in Linjiang city, Jilin Province in 1980. He graduated from the printmaking department of Jilin University of Arts.

In Wang Yan’s works, time is an indispensable component, bestowing his works the enthralling effect of historical dramas. This exhibition is a brief summary of Wang Yan’s creative career. As an artist who embarked on his career at the dawn of the millennium, he unabashedly shares his pasts and contemplations with us through the works in this exhibition.

In Countenance of Time, the quality of etching lends these portraits a sense of time. Wang Yan must have invested much of his emotions and time when he was trying to depict these familiar individuals, where every cut on the etching is akin to the effect of time on our beings. In his series of watercolor sketches, Wang Yan chronicles his experience of studying abroad in Japan, in which he intersperses the landscapes of Japan and his hometown throughout his world of watercolor, almost like a collage of Ukiyo-e and Menghualu. The series To Youth and Homesickness take the whole exhibition back to the theme “My Hometown in the 1990s”—hometown is both a point of departure and destination. While everyone’s youth perishes and their hometowns change with time, homesickness stays forever with the people that leave their hometowns—they can neither go back nor leave this feeling behind. Space is malleable while time is always part of memory, as hometown and youth constitute the concept of time in our memory. This exhibition also showcases Wang Yin’s recent woodblock watermark prints. As a traditional Chinese artistic language, the woodblock watermark technique connects the creation of Wang Yin with his spiritual hometown from a thousand years ago. Although it is a traditional medium, the versatile nature of the woodblock watermark enriches his expression of the flow of time.
